Pizzeria Ortica in Costa Mesa is has happy hour nightly after 7pm, which is pretty awesome because we can get drinks and food for dinner at a happy price at this modern Italian restaurant.
We decided to start the meal with wines and appetizers from the happy hour menu. For main entree, we would try the pizza from happy hour menu, and a pasta dish from the dinner menu.
We had 2 red and 1 white wine. Gotta have some vino to go with delicious Italian food.
I don’t think we got roasted bone marrow on the plate as described on the menu. It still was a great appetizer with cheese, mushrooms and bread.
The mussels was absolutely delicious. We love the slightly spicy and slightly acidic flavor. Dipping the garlic bread in the broth was the best part.
Pizza at Ortica is Neapolitan style pizza. The juice from fresh tomatoes kept the center of the pizza moist. Margherita is a very simple pizza. Just tomatoes, mozzarella cheese, and basil. It was simple, yet had so much flavors that just work perfectly together. The pizza dough was very well made. I don’t usually eat pizza crust, but devoured the entire pie here.
I love freshly handmade pasta! Pappardelle with lamb regu was on the heavier side. Portion was small, but just the right amount due to the heaviness. The braised lamb was soft and savory. The sauce and cheese coated the perfectly al-dante pappardelle. One bite of the pasta with a sip of the red wine was pure happiness.
Dessert and coffee after our meal.
If I see affogato on the dessert menu, that’s usually my go-to. Bitter and sweet. Hot and cold. Opposite attraction is magical.
Delicious wine and food. Friendly service. Great seat at the bar area. We had a wonderful dinner at Pizzeria Ortica.
We passed by the wood-fired pizza oven on our way out. This is where magic was made. Looking forward to return soon to try more of their magic pizzas.
